We left the dock at 5:45am with Captain Ed at the helm headed for a day of trolling
outside the Hot Dog towards the Baltimore Canyon. The day's excitement started early
with great looks of a vertical leaping 300# Thresher Shark. When we arrived at the Hot
Dog the water temperature was 66.4 degrees so we headed further east-southeast towards
the Poorman's Canyon until the water temperature hit 68.0 degrees.
Not long after we setup a White Marlin sent a rod screeming, but we were unable to
set the hook. About a half hour later another White Marlin came up on a lure and Mikey
was able to get the fish hooked up for about a dozen leaps before the hook once again
came loose. The next excitement for the day was a quick visit by a Wahoo, which
resulted in a lost pink and white Islander.
As we worked our way over to the west wall of the Baltimore Canyon we spotted some
lobster pots and were beginning to think about catching some Mahi Mahi when 2 White
Marlins came into our spread. Within moments we had two White Marlins hooked up, but
only one stayed hooked for the duration. And with that, the Snow Goose crew landed
it's first White Marlin for the boat.
After congratulations went around our attention turned to catching some Mahi Mahi
under the potsbefore returning to our main target of White Marlin. Within minutes of
pulling the lines for the ride in we hooked up with a nice bull Mahi Mahi to complete
the day's fishing.
Birding highlights included: Manx (5), Audubon's (5), Greater (30), and Cory's
Shearwaters (10), Wilson's Storm-Petrel (12), Red Phalarope (5). Offshore migrants
at the canyon included: Great Blue Heron (2), Northern Flicker, Brown Thrasher,
Northern Parula (which rode back to land with us), Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, and
Yellow-rumped Warblers.
The crew for the day was Ed, Bill, and Mikey
